Shame, silence and abandonment – mortgage distress experiences revealed in study

Shame, silence and abandonment - mortgage distress experiences revealed in study

Mortgage distress seriously affects people who feel shame, suffer in silence and have a lack of legal representation in court, a new study revealed today. And our banks and society have ‘completely lost sight of the humanity of the situation’, the House Hold report by the Community Action Network (CAN) found.

Other negative impacts on families and individuals include stress, rejection in court and a failure by state systems like MABS and Abhaile to support them properly.

Solicitor Julie Sadlier, who has worked with people in mortgage distress for 10 years, said the report on family homes at risk of possession has highlighted obvious failures.

“The state schemes we have in place don’t seem to be working either. Criteria for the mortgage to rent scheme are not reflective of the current market reality and as the CAN report shows clearly, supports intended to help people with financial and legal advice are failing to build trust.”
